The Functional Circulation Method
Healthy tissue supports healthy skin.
Muscle Manipulation. Fascial Melting. Lymphatic Support.
A Protocol - and a Method for Moving Beyond It
The Functional Circulation Method™ begins with a detailed, repeatable protocol.
This gives practitioners a clear place to start, particularly those who are still developing confidence in facial massage, tissue assessment, or intuitive touch. The protocol can be practiced, repeated, and memorized until the sequence becomes familiar.
But the protocol is not intended to become a rigid script.
As practitioners gain experience, they learn to observe, assess, and respond to the individual in front of them. They begin to recognize tension, restriction, congestion, asymmetry, guarding, and other tissue patterns that may require more attention.
This is where the Functional Circulation Method becomes more than a sequence of techniques.
It becomes a way of thinking.
The protocol teaches you where to begin.
The tissue teaches you where to go next.
Healthy tissue supports healthy skin.
The Functional Circulation Method: Face Intensive, is an integrative approach to working with the chest, neck, scalp, and face through intentional muscle manipulation, fascial melting, and lymphatic movement.
Designed for estheticians, massage therapists, and dual-licensed practitioners, the method looks beyond the surface of the skin to consider the health, mobility, and circulation of the tissues beneath it.
Rather than relying solely on products, tools, or a fixed series of steps, practitioners learn to use their hands, observation skills, and knowledge of tissue response to create more thoughtful and personalized treatments.
What Is Functional Circulation?
The skin does not function independently.
Its appearance and overall vitality are influenced by what is happening within and beneath it—including blood flow, muscular tension, fascial mobility, lymphatic movement, hydration, and the health of the surrounding tissues.
Functional circulation describes the relationship among these systems and how effectively they work together to support healthy tissue.
The Functional Circulation Method™ addresses this relationship through three primary forms of hands-on work:
Muscle Manipulation
To address tension, holding patterns, and muscular restriction throughout the chest, shoulders, neck, scalp, and face.
Fascial Melting
To soften restriction, improve tissue glide, and restore mobility between layers of tissue.
Lymphatic Movement
To support fluid movement and complete the treatment with a gentle, intentional finishing sequence.
-
Many facial treatments are taught through products, equipment, and predetermined steps. While each can have value, practitioners may leave their training knowing how to perform a service without fully understanding how to respond to the person and tissue in front of them.
The Functional Circulation Method™ was developed to help bridge that gap.
Created from Jaime Dubreuil-Payer’s experience across massage therapy, esthetics, spa practice, and hands-on education, the method brings the depth of intentional bodywork into facial treatment.
It teaches practitioners to use their hands for more than product application. Touch becomes a way to assess, respond, and create a treatment shaped by what is happening beneath the skin—not only by what appears on its surface.
-
The Functional Circulation Method™ works with muscle, fascia, and lymph as interconnected influences - not isolated treatment steps.
Muscle Manipulation
Intentional massage techniques address muscular tension and holding patterns throughout the chest, shoulders, neck, scalp, and face. This creates the movement and softness needed for the surrounding tissue to respond.
Fascial Melting
Slow, responsive techniques work with fascial restriction, tissue drag, and limited mobility. Rather than forcing change, the practitioner waits, listens through the hands, and allows the tissue time to soften.
Lymphatic Finishing
A dedicated lymphatic sequence completes the treatment during the final 5, 10, or 20 minutes, depending on the service. It is ideally performed over the finishing product so that when the lymphatic work is complete, the treatment is complete.
Muscle manipulation and fascial melting may remain distinct at times and naturally blend at others. Lymphatic work is intentionally reserved as the final movement of the method—one seamless finish with no additional manipulation afterward.
-
The Functional Circulation Method™ does not expect practitioners to begin with intuitive touch.
Students first learn a detailed, repeatable protocol—a clear sequence they can follow, practice, and memorize as they build confidence in their hands.
The protocol teaches:
• Where to begin
• Where to place the hands
• How to move through each area
• How to transition between techniques
• How muscle and fascial work come together
• How to complete the treatment with lymphatic movementOnce that foundation becomes familiar, practitioners begin developing the second part of the method: Search & Rescue.
Search & Rescue teaches practitioners to notice what the standard sequence cannot predict. They learn to observe tissue response, recognize tension and restriction, reassess what has changed, and adjust their work within their scope of practice.
The goal is not to abandon the protocol. It is to understand it well enough that the practitioner can use it as a foundation—without becoming limited by it.
-
Tools can be valuable - but they should support the practitioner’s decisions, not replace them.
The Functional Circulation Method™ begins with the hands because touch allows the practitioner to feel tissue response in real time. Through direct contact, you learn to recognize tension, restriction, mobility, sensitivity, and change.
Once that foundation is established, tools may be thoughtfully integrated to support a specific treatment goal:
• Facial cups for tissue mobility and targeted sculpting
• Kansa wands for gentle manipulation, relaxation, and grounding
• Gua sha or lymphatic stones for fascial work, contouring, and tissue movementTool use remains optional and takes place before the dedicated lymphatic finish. The practitioner learns not only how to use each tool, but how to decide when it adds value - and when the hands are the better choice.
-
The Functional Circulation Method™ is designed for licensed spa and wellness professionals who want to strengthen their hands-on skills and create more responsive, individualized treatments.
This includes:
• Estheticians
• Massage therapists
• Dual-licensed professionals
• Cosmetologists and facial specialists whose scope includes facial massage
• Serious students preparing to enter an eligible professionFCM may be especially valuable if you:
• Feel overly dependent on products, equipment, or scripted protocols
• Want greater confidence touching and assessing the face
• Want to understand how the chest, neck, scalp, and face influence one another
• Are ready to move beyond performing the same treatment on every client
• Want to refine an existing facial or bodywork service
• Want to create a premium add-on or signature hands-on treatmentAll techniques must be practiced within the laws, licensing requirements, and professional scope established by the practitioner’s state or jurisdiction.
-
The Face Intensive
The Functional Circulation Method™: Face Intensive is an immersive, two-day hands-on training focused on the chest, neck, scalp, and face.
Students do more than watch a demonstration. They practice the full sequence, receive direct feedback, refine their pressure and positioning, and begin learning how to recognize and respond to tissue beneath their hands.
Day One: Build the Foundation
Learn the complete hands-on protocol from beginning to end, including treatment sequencing, practitioner positioning, pressure, pace, transitions, tissue response, and lymphatic finishing.
Day Two: Refine and Integrate
Return to the method with greater awareness and precision. Refine the protocol, strengthen assessment skills, and thoughtfully integrate facial cups, Kansa wands, and gua sha or lymphatic stones.
By the end of the intensive, students leave with a complete method they can continue practicing—not simply a collection of disconnected techniques.
-
By addressing the chest, neck, scalp, and face as connected areas, the Functional Circulation Method™ helps practitioners look beyond the skin’s surface and consider the tissue patterns that may be influencing what they see and feel.
For the client, the method may support:
• A brighter, more radiant appearance
• Reduced visible puffiness and congestion
• Softer-looking lines created by tension and holding patterns
• Improved tissue mobility
• A more lifted and toned appearance
• Deep relaxation and nervous system down-regulation
• A treatment experience that feels responsive and personalizedFor the practitioner, it develops:
• Greater confidence in hands-on facial work
• Stronger palpation and assessment skills
• A clearer understanding of tissue response
• The ability to adapt beyond a predetermined routine
• More intentional use of pressure, pace, and technique
• Less dependence on products or equipment to create value
• A foundation for building premium add-ons or signature services
